Last year I received an invitation to go deer and pheasant
hunting in South Dakota with my neighbor. He had purchased a 1000 acre ranch
with his brother and father and were using it as a base camp for hunting. I had
never been to South Dakota and looked forward to the opportunity to hunt there.
Five of us drove out and spent a week hunting in some of the most plentiful
habitat you could imagine. Each of us brought back one white tail or mule deer a
piece. The food, company, conversation and "liar's dice" around the
dining table at night was fun, and all-in-all a superb time. We created many
memories for all of us.
There is nothing quite like a wood stove crackling in the background while you
feast on 1-day aged venison steaks and roasted potatoes, followed with several
sips of a fine red wine and then an older single-malt scotch poured over 1
or 2 ice cubes. Many bellies were slapped that week followed with an "aaaah...that
was good!"
I received the same invitation this year and enjoyed much the same experience,
however the deer we brought back this year were generally bigger, so luck was
with us.
Each year we have brought our deer to Del Fox, last year being our first year on
the advice of a friend. We were very happy with the processing and especially
loved the pepperoni. Last year we were so pleased with the 2 deer we brought to
them that we brought 4 deer this year between 2 families and referred another
friend as well. Needless to say, we're ordering more pepperoni and going to try
the jerky as well and if it's as good as the pepperoni we'll be quite happy.
